Things Your Indie Label is Doing Wrong

  1. Trying to market albums (see below).
  2. Using Facebook and Myspace to promote (good!) but only connecting with fans with posts that say "Buy Our Album!" Just pushing your music makes things boring, and people have no way of really connecting with your artist, which really sells music anyway. Try throwing in some documentaries or just even random words of wisdom.
  3. Thinking that music alone will make money. People want to see bands live nowadays.
  4. Limiting themselves to one or two genres.
  5. Not knowing when to say "no" to an hack with a pretty face artist. Hard, but in the long run necessary if you want to be successful.
  6. Not saying "yes" to the hack with the pretty face. Hard, but in the long run necessary if you want to be successful.
  7. Allowing your Myspace comments to fill up with spam. Huge turn-off.
  8. Everything you have online is an annoying brown or black color.
  9. You're not registered with the ASCAP. Do it!
  10. You're label page online isn't the hub central to all your artists. If you do have similar sounding artists on your label, fans need an easy way to discover other artists.
  11. Having shows that only feature one of your artists. The more the merrier!
  12. Over hyping. There is such a thing, and it's horrible. For example:
"[The artist] was first known for writing and performing epic compositions like the ones that ring through black-tie concert halls... To the amazement of his growing fans, [the artist] is making a name for himself with the release of his first album..."
You can't be more than you really are. This person has about 400 friends on his Myspace page (only about half of which are actual people). It makes you seem like a fake and it's corny.
